Standard Glass Annealed Float Vs Tempered Glass Toughened Glass

PLEASE NOTE: it is a legal requirement in some countries that only tempered glass be used for furniture. We recommend you to check your countries regulations regarding this.

STANDARD GLASS  – AKA Annealed Glass, Float Glass.

The glass is slowly cooled and stretched, which helps reduce internal stress that could cause breakage. The glass is flexible enough that it can be cut, drilled, polished without breaking. If Standard Glass DOES break, it can shatter into long sharp pieces which can be dangerous.

TEMPERED GLASS  – AKA Toughened Glass, Safety Glass

Tempered glass starts off as standard glass. Before the glass is put into the furnace to be tempered, it must be cut, drilled, polished. After tempering the glass can not be worked on as it will shatter. At the end of the process, it is blasted with cool air in a process called quenching. This causes the outer layer to cool quicker than the inner layer which causes tension within the glass, making it 10 times stronger. If the Tempered Glass DOES break, it can shatter into very small pieces making it safer than Standard Glass.

Mirrors Glass: Mirror glass can only be produced in Standard Glass. If it is made in Tempered Glass the Mirror Glass will distort and so give a strange and distorted reflection.

Glass Thickness:

10mm – Used for table tops

8mm – Used for accent tables example coffee tables.

4mm – Used for mirrors and cabinet doors and shelves.
